Summer Camps

Kids' Summer Camps for Kids

Camping Activities

Children who are at home during the summer can be easily bored. This is especially true when a parent or responsible supervising adult is not present. Some parents choose to use day care so their children are supervised while both parents are at work. This is a valid form of care for a child but it may not allow for all the vast opportunities for education and fun as a summer camp may.

Summer camp

Summer camps for children have been around for a long time but today’s camps are rich with adventure, educational opportunities and bonding experiences. There are many types of camps that are available and each one has its own benefits. Summer camp can last anywhere from a day to several weeks, depending on the needs of the child. There are three basic types of summer camp: residential camps, day camps and travel camps.

Choice of camp

Before choosing a camp, evaluate the needs of the family and the interests of the child. Some camps are geared toward older children while others are more inclusive and designed for the younger set. Residential camps usually are geared toward younger children through early teenagers. Travel camps, however, are geared more toward young to older teenagers. Day camps can be suitable for all ages. There are certain themed camps that are available. There are camps for particular religious affiliations, medical conditions, psychological or behavioral problems and ones that focus on a particular activity. The child should be involved with the decision making process so they will be happy with the choice and enjoy their time at camp.

Traditional camps

Traditional summer camps will focus on a variety of activities for the child. This will include arts and crafts activities, sporting events, contests, exploration, team building and performing. For a child who wants to experience a variety of fun activities, this may be the ideal camp. There are also specialty camps that will focus on a particular activity. These are ideal for children who have a particular interest or skill in which they would like to hone. There are summer camps for just about any hobby or sport that one can think of. If you like performing, there are performance camps that concentrate on singing, dancing, music and acting. If you prefer a particular sport, there are camps for each sport from baseball to lacrosse. There are also academic camps that focus on a particular area of study such as astronomy or zoology. Religious camps will incorporate fun into bible study and life lessons.

Special need camps

If your child has special needs, either physical or psychological, there are camps that are designed to help. Children who have physical handicaps will be paired at the camp with experienced counselors who will help develop the child’s confidence and get them interested in physical camp activities they may not have known they were capable of. Children with psychological or behavioral issues in the camp are given team building exercises and positive encouragement to help build self esteem and a sense of responsibility. Often, these types of camps have group and individual camp therapy classes that will help the child deal with their problems.

Conclusions

There are many different types of summer camp available. Just about any theme that can be thought of has a summer camp that caters to it. When choosing a summer camp, get the children involved with the decision making. Also research what is involved, how long the camp is for and what costs are involved. Make a short list of a few camps and narrow it down from there. A summer camp will keep the child occupied, free from boredom and give a great educational opportunity that is much better than sitting in front of a television all summer.
